It looks like that steampunk-looking Disney video game is really going to happen. I think this is another good step for Disney, after the "Kingdom Hearts" tried out new territory for the classic characters. I do hope this isn't just a Wii exclusive forever. All kidding about which platform is better for console gaming, it doesn't have the same hardware as the other consoles and PC, and I'd love to see some of these scenes rendered with as much detail as possible. That said, I'll probably have to get it when it comes out, just because it looks like how Disneyland would be after the Joker got through unpacking. But Goofy is disturbing even without being a skeletal automaton. Some of the reasons for this are:
1. What is he? Nobody knows, not even the greatest minds to ever debate the topic (that would be the boys from the movie "Stand by Me").
2. If "A Goofy Movie" is to be believed, Goofy has a son. Who's the mother? Unless cartoon characters reproduce like Gremlins, there had to be a mother in there somewhere. It's not like Disney to give a father a kid and not have a story about how mom passed away so Dad can still be fatherly while dating.
3. Hmm... The "Goofy Reproduction" problem might have a cause based in science, as the world once seemed to be heavily populated with his clones. My theory is they're all Imperial Stormtroopers now.
However, he was responsible for what was my childhood's "Wilhelm scream" in the form of his Yaaaaaaa-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoooeeeyyyy!" cry of distress, so he redeems himself in the end. :)
Network TV seems to be afraid of sci-fi, according to Entertainment Weekly. The series "Day One" has been cut down to a mini series, and the reboot of "V" is going to be delayed considerably. "Day One" looked pretty promising, though it's hard to gauge from only a trailer. I do hope the networks take into account the geek penchant for supporting these shows on DvD. The only numbers I could find showed that True Blood outsold its competition, but it wouldn't surprise me that most halfway-decent genre series have steadier long-term sales than many "regular" dramas.
And now I must go draw a comic making fun of this "Tooth Fairy" movie that The Rock is inflicting on us. So while I do that, here's...
- A couple of Champions links for all the players out there: a character planner application and a look at weapon replacements in the game since they won't show up in the costume editor at the tailor.
- There's an amazing collection of "minimalist" movie posters at Seek and Speak dot com, though as of this posting, you have to scroll down and click "continue" to get past an explanation for a little hoo-hah over artwork similarities.
- When your dog 'spins' at cars, it might need to go into the shop.
- Wow. Here's a TV mashup that has to be seen and heard (a few off-color words warnin') to be believed: The Golden Age of Video. And if you covet the mp3, we've got you covered.
- I love matching games. Clouds 2 fills that affection void in my soul.
- The University of Florida has a zombie preparedness plan.
- K-9 is getting another series, which might not be a good thing, especially since the company producing it includes the word "zany" in the description.
- A bit of the old video game ultra-violence in the ironically named The Tickler. "Tickle" people until they expire, then buy better things to tickle them with like Tesla-based weapons, flame throwers, and so forth.

Dippy Dog
Goofy's original name was going to be "Dippy Dog", but it was changed because the liked the sound of "Goofy" better. Goofy's a Dog. Always has been. Always will be. Disney himself said so. It's not hard. And yes, pluto is also a dog, that is very different, their all animals. Cope.October 6 2009, 18:13:22 UTC 2 years ago
Re: Dippy Dog
Ah, but then you have the "Pluto Paradox." Which dog should be walking the other? And yeah, I read the Wikipedia entry. It's from there that a few think his son, Max, might be the offspring of him and Clarabelle the Cow.

Re: Dippy Dog
I haven't read the Wikipedia entry, but from some of the more recent stuff (like the Mickey version of the Three Muskateers) Clarabelle is who they usually pair him up with. Mickey+Minny, Donald+Daisy, Goofy+Clarabelle. Though there really should be some kind of Goofette.2 years ago

Re: Dippy Dog
Really? I always thought Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar were a pair... or maybe that was only in the comic strip.October 6 2009, 12:07:54 UTC 2 years ago
Theory 2: Sci-fi lends itself to high concepts, which work better with a definite ending. When forced to sustain a series, where writers have to keep coming up with new plots every week that somehow extend the high concept, the series gets too bogged down in its own mythology to survive (Exhibit B: Lost, X-Files), or simply runs out of new things to do (Exhibit C: Heroes, the original V: the Series).
Day One looks pretty cool in the trailer, and when I first saw it was going to be a mini-series, I thought that was a good thing, because then it would have a definite end. But if it's a "mini-series as backdoor pilot," then it likely won't end properly, the series will never be made, and that'll be it.
Either way, I'll likely wait for it to show up on Netflix. I haven't watched commercial TV (except for sports) since...when did Studio 60 premiere?

What TV execs see, is shows that audiences don't watch, and they interpret the lack of audience in the only way that doesn't fault themselves. They believe audiences don't like SciFi. When in reality, what audiences don't like, is crap.
Occasionally a show like Dr. Who, or The Twilight Zone, or The Prisoner, will make creative use of limited budgets by focusing on characterization and story, and these shows are successful. Leading TV execs to believe that audiences have changed their mind, now like SciFi, and leads to a bunch of cheaply produced and crappy shows. Like; Automan, Street Hawk and Whiz Kids, The Powers of Jason Starr, etc.
Some of those turn out to be audience pleasers, like Knight Rider, Heroes and Buck Rogers, despite being mostly terrible, and succeed for a few years before falling prey to cheapening budgets.
A few, like Stargate and Battlestar Gallactica, are very good, can't get major network backing, and still manage to succeed. But most of the good ones are simply never given a chance, like Firefly or Space: Above and Beyond and are pretty quickly canceled.

Of course, even if you do manage to get something kind of cool like that in your show, it's hard to promote it without some "flash bang FOOM" for the trailer...
Darnit.

Re: A new Doctor Who logo was released today.
The logo just shows up during the opening credits. I'd really have to see the whole credits to know if the whole thing looks good or not. I really didn't care much for the current one when it was revealed, but it looked nice enough flashing by on screen when the show started.I care vastly more about the theme music. I have more of an emotional connection to that.

Rock of faires
The Tooth Fairy movie doesn't look so bad. It looks like it's in the same mold as Tim Allen's Santa Clause movies. For what it is, it'll be funny. The real problem is that the Rock is a big, muscular action star who is working at a time when that's not very popular. These days people are more interested in the next Jason Borne than the next Conan the Barbarian.
If it wasn't for the fact that Dwayne Johnson is also pretty funny, I don't think he'd be making movies at all.
Or worse, he'd be the next Dolph Lundgren.
Not that I have anything against Dolph Lundgren, I just feel sorry for a guy whose entire career has been defined by movies that afford Arnold Schwarzenegger. I think replacement-Schwarzenegger-land is where Dwayne Johnson would be right now if he wasn't doing stuff like this.
