Watchmen, Bye-Bye B-5, and Dr. Horrible

The trailer for The Watchmen has hit the 'net, and Doc Manhattan certainly looks like the omnipotent being he becomes. Readers of the book might find some scenes akin to showing the explosion of the Death Star during a "Star Wars" trailer, but hey, it's not like they haven't sold a few copies, right?

As for the book itself, I did enjoy it as one of the first "deconstructing superheroes" stories I read, soon to be followed by comics like "Top 10," "Astro City," "Planetary," and other graphic presentations of superheroes with a dash more "real life" than had been seen before. I think the film has the potential to be more dark than even The Dark Knight currently is (and the word "dark" appears more times in the collected reviews for the Batman film than it probably does in the database of player names in "City of Heroes"), and I do wonder how much of that they're going to let show through in the end. And will this let other comic book movies go a bit more towards the shady side of things? With Marvel putting out an "Avengres" film soon, will they take, say, the disfunctional relationship of the Pyms from "The Ultimates?" Perhaps give Tony Stark that brain tumor?

But my biggest question about these films is... will there be permits issued for Doc Manhattan cosplayers? This could be REALLY important.

Has B5 gone beyond the rim for good? JMS seems to think it has, and I kind of agree with his premise; further installations should add to Babylon-5, rather than detract from it. And if Warner Bros isn't willing to cough up more than $2 million per DvD feature, and that's not enough to do something worthwhile, then it's probably best not to go ahead. Not that I wouldn't mind an honest-to-Valen theatrical movie, but that would probably take a lot of persuasion for most studios. I say that because things seem to go south for Straczynski when studios begin to cut back or meddle.

But more importanly, the final chapter of Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog is up for download, and it goes on to iTunes (where you have to pay) after Sunday, so what are you waiting for? Stop filling out that to be his sidekick and watch, already!

- Some point-n-click adventure fun with Escape From Octlien. I managed to "win" without getting the full score. Be sure to click on all of the wall panels.
- From the "real places that would make awesome D&D adventure settings" comes the underground town of Kariz, Iran.
- Star Rebellion is a turret defense game with some resource gathering tossed in just to make everything more strategic.
- Habanera, as performed by the Swedish Chef, Beaker, and Animal.
- Ever wanted a blog where you can find celebrites and oddball match-ups that they Totally Look Like? I never knew Fred Thompson looked so much like Vigo...
- There's a new (warning for the young'uns, as there's mutant head-shots in store) Fallout 3 trailer that includes some pretty sweet-looking gameplay footage.
- Lastly, from the "I wish I'd thought of that for a t-shirt" file, comes the worlds nerdiest cross-stitch.

You know, I still have some misgivings about the treatment of the Fallout 'verse, but that trailer looked pretty cool.
(I think I'm maybe considering it a remake rather than a sequel in my own mind though.)

And Dr. Horrible is great. Does anyone know if it's going to be continued beyond it's three-parter?

You're far from alone on that score. The Beth forum is practically unreadable from all the hate between Fallout fans and those yokels who act like their eyes will bleed if they're forced to look at anything but cutting-edge graphics.

For what it's worth, the actual gameplay videos make it look like F3 is going to be at the same speed as Oblivion. The first time I saw that trailer I was more reminded of Serious Sam than anything else.

I want to look at the how the skill system impacts the story. I presume the combat is easiest to "demo" on such a trailer, so I'm holding out hope that their reports of an "un-munchkinable" stat system that determines what endings you can achieve are true.

It's been available on iTunes since the start; after the 20th those in the U.S. (but not internationally) can buy it from iTunes. All three acts are still available online today (Sunday, the 20th).

Your "world's nerdiest cross-stitch" comes from the third episode of Futurama.

Isn't that cross-stitch a loop that repeats HOME SWEET HOME SWEET HOME etc? Good thing we hoomans are too smart to stand there and gawk until someone reboots us. ;-)

I must turn in my geek card. I can't believe I forgot that.

I can see our generation in the nursing home now, quoting half-remembered catch phrases and D&D rules...

I don't think they'd need to give Tony Stark a brain tumor -- his issues with alcoholism are pretty dark on their own.

I think he kinda/sorta had both in The Ultimates (at least he drank a lot).

I'm rusty (pardon the pun) on my Iron Man lore, but doesn't the alcohol make Rhody take up being the silver/red Iron Man and/or War Machine? Then Tony gets his act together, but by then, Rhodes is kind of messed up by being in the armor all the time?

Pity with Stane gone, they can't do that iconic cover in film: http://www.fortunecity.com/tatooine/niven/142/img/op1601.jpg

Well, most of what I know regarding Iron Man lore came when I gained an interest after the film (because Pepper Potts is awesome and can kick ass in a non-powered way without ever getting captured by bad guys). Yeah, from what I gathered, Tony hit a low point with the alcoholism, Stane took over the company, and Rhodey became War Machine so at least someone would be a superhero . . . and I've picked up Invincible Iron Man, the new title that seems designed to introduce fans of the movie into the mythos; that image is used in #3, in a flashback. But it also introduces Stane's son, which could lead to potential for the same scene in the sequel.

A son? Hee-hee. To quote the CEO of OCP in "Robocop 2," "They have relatives, they ALWAYS do..." :)

And I'm with you on Pepper Potts: Redheads can always be counted on to help save the world!

Yep. Or a sibling. Or a clone. Or a robot double that's convinced they're the original.

The thing is, it seems like 99.9% of the time, even the female characters who can kick ass have some sort of 'excuse' -- they're the chosen one or what have you, as if to say a normal girl would have no hope of pulling it off. But Pepper Potts (and Ro Rowen in Zeta Project, for another) manage to face down baddies and use mundane-yet-awesome skills to save the day. This makes them awesome squared.

oh god,,, watched the trailer for the watchmen last night, and then had to try to explain it to my roommate who had never heard of it, and she kept asking "is it marvel, is it marvel, because I won't watch it if it isn't"

sigh...

Oh that's lovely. Like we comic nerds don't have enough problems with credibility from the serious lit crowds...

Hmm, what's she say about Dark Knight?

she didn't want to go to it, about 3 of us dragged her to the midnight showing of it anyway. kept having to explain what was going on, and then we all had a big fight because we wanted to go home when the credits started (cause it was three am and we would have to walk back home) and she kept insisting we stay and sit thru ALL the credits.

not sure she was that crazy abotu it, she kept complaining that two face was too gorey. I did admit he would prolly have issues with infecting setting in pretty quickly...

Ah well, I suppose we can't drag everyone, kicking and screaming, into agreement with us about what's good and what isn't. Life would probably be pretty boring if no one disagreed with us anyway. :)

The "best" movie from a comic book by reaction for me was "Blade."

We went in on a free screening, TOTALLY expecting it to stink, but it exceeded our expectations immensely. So while not the greatest movie ever, the distance between "attitude going in and coming out" was the largest for me and the group I saw it with.

I agree with you, i have a friend like that, but ive kidna pummeled him into submission when it comes to who is better, dc or marvel. I really dont give a crud who makes it, they both have great heroes, though from my expericence Marvel has more off the wall characters than dc.

before Batman Begins came out, i did have rather low standards for that type of movie, but now, they have raised the bar greatly. The thing is, In time it said they were setting up for a third movie, and i didnt see anything. What did i miss?

Cheyenne Wright and I said that the comic book art nerds would also argue about what kind of lead (4H? 2B? HB?) would be best for the Joker to use for, ah, "ending conversations." :)

By the way, regarding 'Escape from Octlien' and 'Ruins of Pantheon', I would suggest you link the main site instead of the individual games as if you play the five games in order, they make a bit more sense. The link is: http://aztec.sakura.ne.jp/index.html

I ended up going to the 315 am showing in imax in Denver, and that was pretty freaking sweet. The Dark Knight is as far as im concernced, the greatest comic movie so far. I was really suprised by how awesome a job ledger did as the joker, he was PERFECT!

When the watchmen trailer ended, the whole theater was clapping, and im probably gonna get eaten alive for this, but id never heard of it. Is it really all its cracked up to be, and as a fairly light comic book reader, will it be something i will enjoy enough to pick up a copy, or is it gonna confuse the heck out of me? I suppose that if i can keep up with most of marvels stuff, i really have nothing to worry about. It does look kinda cool, but the whole, Greatest graphic novel of all time thing makes me dubious. does it truly deserve that title?

Watchmen was good, though I've enjoyed other comics more. When people make big claims about it's quality, it's important to remember when it came out. Watchmen is written in a very serious, deep way that was extremely unusual for comics at the time. That kind of character development is a lot more common these days, which makes Watchmen seem a little less special if you read it for the first time now. It had a serious influence on a lot of later comic writers, which is a big part of why it is held in high regard.

I wouldn't say it's a light comic, but it is self contained. It starts from scratch with new characters, so there's nothing you are supposed to have read first. I can't really say if a casual reader would like it or not. I didn't even like all of it, I skipped a certain side story that didn't relate directly to the main story.

Star Rebellion is decent, but it only has the first four levels available. After that it tells you to go to their home site and start over.

I did that and the game on their home site won't load. Grrr.
