Well, I saw "300." There are many reasons to enjoy this film. If you really dug the zero-g massacre on the Klingon ship in Star Trek VI, you'll dig this movie. If you liked the Matrix's "bullet time," you'll like 300's "spear time." This is also a film that approaches Verhoven-level limb detachment, so be warned if'n you're squeamish. Now, I know it's not historically accurate in a lot of ways, and better heads than mine have examined it, including the folks at Wikipedia. The other aspect of the film that gets discussed is parallels to our current political climate. I, for one, don't think it works as either a criticism of any current wars or any current leaders per se. I say that because I love me a good metaphor, especially a subtle and sneaky one that smacks you in the face when you least expect it. For this movie, I've heard the Spartans represent America, fighting the Middle Eastern enemy, but... in this movie, the guys from Persia are more technologically advanced, they aren't terrorists, just aggressive, and the Spartan-Americans defy religious edict rather than claim it. And on and on. I've tried to kind of shoe-horn it, but every angle where I think I've got an analogy, there's something that keeps it from fitting perfectly. So, I just gave up and enjoyed watching the Chippendales with shields play in a swords-and-sandals epic where everyone seemed to have the "great cleave" feat.
I also created a t-shirt design involving the 300 that's debuting at Offworld Designs' booth at GAMA in Las Vegas this weekend. I'll post 'er here (along with some more designs for this summer) when it goes up for sale in the coming weeks!
And now, after much delay due to my inability to schedule my bathing routines, let alone my updates, we proudly present the rules for the Zombie Chow Down game! All you need, in addition to the rules is a method for determining where you munch your victims. We recommend a pair of these body part dice.
The Symphony Art project for this year will be completed this Saturday (that's when it's due. Nothing like waiting until the last minute, like in my college art classes), and this is the state it's currently in. I'm taking lots of film footage of the process, so I'll have something to show everyone on YouTube soon. In the meantime, I've added a button below called 'Who Arted?' which leads to very crude HTML pages of past non-comic projects I've worked on (or at least two of them. I'm hunting up the photos of at least one more previous art thingie).
And here's a video game update: Namco has officially announced Beautiful Katamari, with even more ginormous playfields. Sadly, it's for PS3 and Xbox 360, so we meager PS2 owners will have to upgrade.
Doctor Who hinted at more plot to come this season. Are we going to see the Master? I heard rumors about the Doctor having a grandson; is he in the works? Also, are the writers planning on sticking to the "13 regenerations" rule, which will mean an eventual end for our beloved Time Lord? I must say I didn't notice that the majority of this week's episode used the same set over and over, because gosh-darn-it, the setup for the episode was pretty entertaining. Both Who and Farscape have that "out there" sci-fi that gives you improbable ideas and settings, and leaves it up to others to explain why it is as it is, and I, for one, like some of that along with my more "realistic" sci-fi (i.e. B-5, BSG, etc.).
This... is... LINKAAAAAA!
- The second Fantastic Four film is coming, but did you know an FF film was made by schlock-master Roger Corman in 1994? Check out the trailer from this lost masterpiece.
- No con is safe. The 501st Stormtrooper Legion has their own hot-air balloon.
- In case you think you're having a bad day, look at what happens if the storm sewer violently backs up on the interstate you're using.
- More Tower Defense-style gaming! This time, the name of the game is Onslaught!
- From last week's comment thread, we re-present some handy convention costuming rules.
- I so want a hamster shredder! It's not what you think, and is kind of a cute idea for the office.
- Don't Hassle the Hoff: A long time ago in a film far, far from epic, David Hasselhoff had a lightsaber battle with a stop-motion tin man on steroids. I loved this film as a kid, when our small town would occasionally get free Showtime for a weekend.
- And lastly, because I'm a TMBG fan, here's a nifty flash film of their song Mister Smalls.

that said, why are you leaving dorkstorm?
April 19 2007, 07:17:17 UTC 5 years ago
Don't get me wrong; I'm not blaming John for anything. He's got his projects and I have mine. Mine are just more centered on producing comics. :) Plus, neither Dork Storm nor Henchman Publishing really described what I was doing with ps238, so I thought a more super-heroey name would fit the bill.
And sorry about ending Nodwick, but the little guy just hasn't been pulling in the readers like he used to (in comic book form, that is), while ps238 seems to be on an upward trend.
I think the "death" of fantasy comics (both gaming and non) seems to have several reasons. For one, you can get almost every flavor of fantasy comic online these days for free. Also, fantasy has been a niche market, with only a few properties being able to haul in the cash and the eyeballs to keep going (like Conan, comics based on best-selling D&D novels, etc.). But times change, and perhaps someday Nodwick will be a hot property in dead tree format again. 'Till then, he's still haulin' on the web and in the back of ps238.

If they are, consider that they've relaunched the series with Christopher Eccelston. So Eccelston is this series' first Doctor and Tennant is the second Doctor. (Unless something has been mentioned in season three's episodes, which I haven't seen yet.)

I mean, think of the scarf!
Plus, I think Sarah Jane having K-9 validates at least the fourth Doctor having existed in this current storyline.

On the subject of 300 as a metaphor for current american politcal situation.....
...starting with a quick outline of my politics. In UK terms I'm a left of centre liberal with a loathing for the tory party and a love of the NHS. Which I believe means in US terms I'm somewhat to the left of Lenin.
Personally I agree with you - 300 as a metaphor for current american political activities suck. Hell a friend of mine on reading the comic said that in terms of strength (ie overwhelming) American can only fit into one role - that of the Persians.
However I think it calls to a particular American mind set - the one that see America, and freedom itself, as under threat from the 'hordes' of outsiders.

I wen into the moviehaving read the comic. The story, being todl from a Spartans point of veiw is full of pro-spartan propaganda. It's boisterous and brash and I was looking forward to it.
However, the degree to which the film-makers deliberately de-humanised the persians was horrifying. I can deal with cruel, evil paper-villians, but the horde of monsters unleashed was truly upsetting. the deformed immortals, the grotesque giant, the harem, the executioner... I was reminded of the way that some people inm my neck of the woods.. who may be alluded to rednecks or trailer trash... tend to talk about Iraqis. Except on screen, they are literally demonised!
I don't know how much of that was Frank. They looked like something he would design but this isn't Sin City.. It caught me off-guard and put me off the movie.
Other than that, I was surprised a the depth of character the lead actor brought to King Leonidas. Excellent work there *applause*

And again, the thing I have a hard time with as far as making them out to be anyone specific in the current geopolitical climate is that they're halfway decent at fighting. But yeah, their proto-Muslim aspects could lead one to assume they were a reflection of modern-day views.
I wonder if the filmmakers figured, "hey, the comic has one ogre-lookin' guy in it. LOTR made a ton of money. Let's have orcs, too!" and so it went. :)

Roger Corman's Fantastic Four
Not only have I heard about it, but I have it. It was either so bad that it was never released (but someone snuck it out), or it was made but never intended for release, but the studio who made it was going to lose the rights to it if they didn't start production by a certain date (according to Stan Lee).Anyway, it got out, and you can pick up bootlegs at sci-fi conventions.
My favorite part is when Alicia Masters is chloroformed by a bad guy, and the camera switches its POV to Alicia to show things going blurry then black.
(The character Alicia Masters is blind)

Re: Roger Corman's Fantastic Four
I heard it was the rights thing. And I do have a soft spot for Roger Corman's particular brand of bad filmmaking... as long as Joel and the Bots watch his movies with me. :)If my nerd-lore is correct, the script for "Waterworld" was made for him as a rip-off of the "Mad Max" franchise. Reportedly, he rejected it as being too expensive to film.

Doctor Nerding
Actually the Doctor is known to have had a granddaughter, Susan, back when he was still in his 1st regeneration. It would be great if that is who the Face was talking about, or Romana, but the most likely candidate is the Master. As for the 13 regenerations, it seemed that it was always a "Time Lord imposed" rule than a fact of their biology, and now that there are all gone except for him and whoever Boe was talking about, it may no longer be an issue. All said I'm hoping Ten lasts at least as long as Four.
April 19 2007, 12:50:50 UTC 5 years ago
Re: Doctor Nerding
I want to say it was during the Colin Baker run, specifically during the "Trial of a Time Lord" series, where the Master was making demands of Gallifrey, and he asked for 13 new lives. Now, I think he was still in a human(ish) body that he stole from Traken, but maybe they have a "regeneration-o-matic" thing somewhere. And I agree about David Tennant. I could do with him being the Doctor for quite some time. I wonder how long it's going to be before we get our first "paradox" episode with this new run?

Aaron,My wife and I enjoy your website. In fact, it's the home page on our computer! Keep up the good work.
I have a quick question for you. Where are you watching Doctor Who? I haven't seen it advertise at all on Sci-Fi and am seriously missing my Sci-Fi....especially since BSG won't have new episodes until '08.
Thanks for any help and God Bless.

psst, spelling-tyrant here
In your Zombie dice rules (great game by the way, that's why I noticed the typo) 'on each turn the player will _loose_ 1 Bite Token' should probably 'lose 1 Bite Token'.As a rules issue, I'm not certain how many dice I'm supposed to be rolling. Is it 2 Body Dice or 3 6-siders or something else altogether? I ask because I'm not certain how you roll a double wild. Thanks for your comics & this game.

Ben Grimm's mask looks straight out of the Ninja Turtles films, but at least he's got "the brow."
I saw clips of it at a con, and found myself wanting to laugh and cry at the special effects. Corman's use of "forced perspective" to make it look like Reed was stretching was just... indescribable. It's a pity MST3K never got the chance to do this movie!

Doctor Who and Douglas Adams
It seems in a few week (May 12th episode) there is a Douglas Adams Tribute Episode. It's called 42 and airing (in the UK) a day after the aniversary of Douglas's death...April 20 2007, 21:00:38 UTC 5 years ago
Re: Doctor Who and Douglas Adams
Is it part of the regular series, or a special episode? I always heard that Adams had some fantastic scripts that for one reason or another (usually being beyond the FX abilities of the era) couldn't be filmed.5 years ago

Fantastic 4
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that theme music in the preview from 'Battle Beyond the Stars'? Not only that, but the entire special effects sure looked like it was from the same director of said Battle movie.April 22 2007, 06:40:05 UTC 5 years ago
Re: Fantastic 4
I wonder if it pulled from the same stock FX footage library? I think BBTS had the same footage as one or two other films (kinda like how the effects from the original Battlestar Galactica were traded around like the famous "Wilhelm" scream).Anonymous

Onslaught
IMHO it's one of the more simple tower defense's game and the more amusing. The game consist in defend the Area51 from the evil corporate symbols, there are just 3 kind of weapons :rapid cannon, laser and missiles. Rapid canon is cheap and effective for the first level, missiles are powerful and have a expanded ratio but laser is the more important because you can works in chains adding power to the laser.
Also you can powerup your weapons individually or buy a upgrade unit.
Sadly the game from the level 106 start lagging.
Yay for unslaught .
ps :I liked the extreme 4x4 room makeover :-D. yay for it too.
