Henchman Publishing makes a change!

Big doings goin' on here at what used to be Henchman Publishing. We're now Do Gooder Press, LLC! So what the heck is goin' on? Well, for starters, ps238 is going to go monthly. I'm also going to start posting comic pages at ps238.com starting with issues 1 and 2 in their entirety and then putting up pages from subsequent issues on a 3-day-a-week schedule. This'll start by next week, if all goes well. Nodwick and FFN will still update as per usual. Both comics will run in ps238 as backup features.

"What? Nodwick is a backup?" Yep, after Nodwick 36 ships from the printer, our Hench-pal is going to keep on lugging loot here, in the pages of Dragon Magazine, and in the pages of ps238. Why? Well, it's a long story to do with sales numbers, fan response to ps238, and doing what I have to in order to keep this business going. Nodwick has been my passion for seven years now, but sadly, not everyone has stuck with him. Being a bi-monthly comic was part of that, I'm told, as retailers (and readers, often) would rather have regular monthly comics rather than bi-monthly. I've been shown numbers that reflect the phenomenon of middling monthly comics outselling brilliant but bi-monthly publications.

But this isn't just about keeping a roof over my drawing table! Ps238 has really expanded my horizons. I've got a school full of super-kids, each with their own stories to tell. And then there's Tyler, the boy with no powers, who has won the hearts of just about everyone I run into. This con season was a real eye-opener. For every Nodwick purchase, there were about three ps238. Almost everyone told Cristi and me, "I love Nodwick, but ps238 is my FAVORITE," and so forth. I'm pretty slow on the uptake most days, but I got this one cold.

Does this mean the end for our Henchman and his party? By no means! In fact, I think I'll be able to finally unite the comic and webcomic continuities soon, and delve into longer-form stories with strips rather than pages. More Nodwick collections are in the offing in 2007, so be sure to look out for those (along with Nodwick's movie appearance in "Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising") this summer!

And readers of The Maine Edge will be able to enjoy Full Frontal Nerdity in print! Yes, our gang of geeks will make a weekly appearance in this fine New England publication. They must have rolled a natural 20 on something, but I'm not sure what. :)

Turning to news of the nerdy, we lead off with a peek into what "Lost" writer J.J. Abrams is saying about the Star Trek prequel movie he's working on. It worries me a little that he'd prefer viewers not know much about Star Trek when they see it, but after the more recent Trek films, I don't see how he can do much worse. Not that all current Trek offerings are bad; Of the latest Trek show, "Enterprise," I can say that I'd gladly recommend the fourth season to anyone... except for the series finale. Berman & Braga weren't calling the shots, and they got writers that were so good that the most unpolished thing on the show was the acting (grin). Three-show arcs, stories about characters and development of the Federation... it was what the show should have been from the start. I'm also hearing rumors about a new Star Trek cartoon that takes place after "Next Generation." If I find anything concrete, I'll be sure to toss up a link.

Linkstains:

- Here's a forum that's got just about just about every leaked image from the new Transformers movie. I'm still not wild about Megatron, but I guess there's no good way to pull off the original design.
- Long ago, I played the original "Rayman" video game. He's being revived, as these ads demonstrate. The bunnies are the "villains," and they seem to like yelling "DAAAAAAHHH!" a lot. It's intriguingly hilarious.
- Since I mentioned J.J. Abrams (of "Mission Impossible III" fame), I think it's only fair I post this video using the audio from MI3's trailer combined with 'Finding Nemo' footage. Stick around for the explosions; that's when it gets disturbingly funny.
- I want this aquarium. Or a pony. Whichever.
- Here's a pretty cool idea for a clock-oriented art project. I've got some old hardcover gaming books which are falling apart that would make nifty timepieces!
- Bruce Campbell has made Old Spice cool to use, I suppose. You can say "I don't smell like my dad. I smell like Ash. Hail to the King, baby!"
- Flash Element TD is a game where you purchase and set up towers with the goal of having said towers destroy as many enemy units as you can as they run through a nearby maze. Based on World of Warcraft.

Thank you. So much. It'll be so much easier to turn my friends onto this series now.

More ps238 is *excellent*, excellent. I'm happy that Nodwick will be able to continue on, though.

Speaking of Nodwick, I'm getting a weird vibe - old hard sf story about a FTL drive with a nasty consequence if you're too close to a grav well...

Do you remember the title? It sounds eeenteresting...

And I'm not sure where I got the idea from. I do like Stargate, which is one of those "technological advancement used to be higher, but that pesky cataclysm ruined everything" stories. Also, from Dragonlance to the Wheel of Time, a lot of fantasy has that "age of legends/dreams/toilet paper" setting where older civilzations made the cool stuff the monster is guarding.

Great to hear that ps238 is getting even better. Also, weird that I'm reading King's 'On Writing' right now. He hasn't covered random contrivance as a must have yet - He probably considers it a trade secret - but I'm sure he'll get to it before the end.

I'm not sure he does. It's just something I noticed about his stories (not that this is a bad mechanic, he just likes using it). There's almost always someone who is psychic or has a vision or a premonition or something, which spurs the character(s) to act with urgency when they normally wouldn't.

For example, the blind girl in "The Langoliers." Without her "sensing" that something was wrong, the cast probably wouldn't have tried to escape the situation they were in, or at least, not with enough speed to make a difference.

Anyway, I've tried publicizing the joy of PS238 over at Wizard magazine's website. Here's hoping for a feature one day.

Good to see ps238 hitting the shelves on a monehtly basis.

I'll be sad to see my little buddy Nodwick heading off to the backburner for a spell. But then again, Nodwick is a sort of sidekick sort of fellow.

Who knows. Maybe pulling the henchbud from the public eye will inspire a greater desire for him. People always want what they can't have.

And, as a natural Mainer...I'm glad the Edge got a hold of your strip.

I would be upset if Nodwick got canceled altogether... He's the main reason I picked up on your art/writing in the first place. On the other hand, I do appreciate the need to put him on the back burner for a time. And more PS238 is always a good thing.

When you can't run, you crawl, and when you can't crawl, when you can't do that...

I was trying to find the right time and way to say this, but I think you saved me the trouble... I cancelled Nodwick at issue #35. I felt the storyline was going nowhere, and the jokes weren't as much fun as they used to be. That may have more to do with my now being an ex-gamer - not having run a game in over a year, and selling my 20-year collection off - than with your storytelling skills. But, hey, I traded half my Deadlands collection for four nights in the spare bed of a hotel room with two of my best friends, at our local science-fiction convention* in a couple of months - and my Henchman's Union Membership Card is still a treasured possession that goes with me everywhere. I never really got into ps238, and full frontal nerdity is an okay back-up feature, so let me say:

Thank you for carrying me through the twilight of my gaming career.

OK, how does that aquarium work? Unless the tanks at both ends are airtight sealed, then the water in the "tubing" would just run out and overflow, wouldn't it? From the photos I saw, I didn't see anything special sealing those tanks.

As to PS238, kind of good news, as Nodwick is still my favourite, but going monthly and getting the bigger draw is a good thing, whichever way you cut it. I have to agree, PS238 definitely does have the bigger canvas to work with and I have kind of felt that things needed to move along a little quicker; so, whilst I'll be sad not to get regular large doses of Nodwick, I can at least look forward to seeing more revealed in PS238.

Maybe the water is pumped through? You could have some kind of return system with a pump from each tank filling up the tubing. The pictures aren't very clear though, and I think it looks a bit suspect... still, I'm sure there is a way to do it...

Superheroes are more popular with comic book fans than fantasy. Imagine that. :-)

It is gratifying to see an independent comic book writer/artist who's willing to change for their fans. Of course, I read PS238 and not Nodwick, so a fan who's the other way around would not think so. I look forward to monthly PS238 . . . assuming Diamond will get it to my store on time! Fantasy is a very hard sell. The few I can think of that make a go of it are "Bone," "Artesia," whatever version of "Red Sonja" is being done, and a few others ("Kings and Thieves," for example).

I don't know if that people can get their fantasy stuff from video games and RPGs, or that so much fantasy has been so poorly done in the past (but then again, a lot of Sci Fi has been WRETCHEDLY done in the past and it's still kicking). 'Tis a mystery...

Still, I certainly won't say no to more ps238. And I sure as hell want to know more about the Union of Justice (granted, the comic's not about them, but still!) Also want to see Miss Kyle finally open up a can on someone...she looked so righteous when she was about to go up against the Rainmaker...

The issue people have with Megatron is actually kind of mistaken, anyways. The design that's floating around is his "Cybertronian" form -- what he looked like before coming to Earth. It looks alien because he is alien. He's supposed to get an Earth-based form like all the others do, eventually. All of them start with alien forms: here's an image of toys of Prime and Starscream in their pre-Earth forms.

I'm glad the makers are doing a good job of keeping Megatron's Earth form secret, actually.

I gotta say that Nodwick is what got me into reading your stuff, but I have been a huge fan of PS238 since it started. Also its been a little while since we've chatted, but it seems like Nodwick was becoming a chore to write because you've written so much and it becomes hard to keep it new (considering you've hit almost all of the giants of fantasy in parody). Everytime we've discussed PS238 though its been like you were hit with a breath of fresh air, the stuff that you were doing for PS238 seemed to just be leaping out from you mind. When you were talking about it almost seemed like that episode of ,I think, Darkwing Duck where the writer was channeling the universe the Darkwing Duck was and was publishing the adventures in the 'real' world. I'm really glad your finding away to balance everything that you had done that brightens our days, but if any of them was going to get the spotlight more than the others I'm glad it was PS238. I think that currently this is your best work and I have been enjoying it the most of all of them.

PS238 Monthly?!?!?!?! Hot bloody da-N! About freakin' time! I've already hooked my boss on it (I've only been here four months), and I begin jonesing for the next one about 10 minutes after I finish an issue.

Don't you get it?!?! Most of us were super-hero kids in our own hearts, and PS 238 speaks to the secret fantasies of our innnermost children. Tyler, of course, speaks to the lonely geek outsider that a lot of us really were, and the loneliness and alienation we felt, so when he prevails, or makes a huge difference, it's us that's triumphing. We, too, had parents who had expectations we felt we couldn't meet, who kept assuring those around us that we were brilliant or special.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking it monthly. Where do I subscribe?

I can understand the numbers game, and I do hope the break in Nodwick does bring about a fresh life for the series. The story was great, but sometimes the jokes were starting to fall a bit flat. :D Looking forward to it all tying up though.

My real question comes in the fact I've got a subscriptions for both comics, and I don't think my Nodwick one will run out with #36. Will my Nodwick sub just roll over to PS238, or will I get refunded? And will your subscription dudes be able to keep them mailed on time? Because the last about 4-6 issues of each series, I've had to wait until 2 were released before they were mailed to me. >:O I tried complaining once, but all I got was brushed to the side, it felt like. I have two things I wish to expose.

No, not *THOSE*...

The first is a British quiz show called Quite Interesting. It's hilarious. If you've never heard of it, it is hosted by a man named Stephen Fry, and the questions are quite often so difficult that they're virtually impossible to answer correctly. So, points are awarded according to how 'interesting' the answers are, not whether or not they're correct (though the correct answer generally IS extremely intriguing more often than not). Thus, hilarity ensues.

Watch episode one here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZyMeEXEVaI

Secondly, if you want to watch one of dozens of movies, from Hogfather to Eragon, and anime and television shows and American cartoons and so on, you have merely to look at All U C. They have videos galore here, and oftentimes a few days after they come out in theaters.

You can visit them here: http://www.alluc.org

Well, I'm clearly in the minority here, but I figure I'll get in my 2p, 'cuz that's the kinda whiner I am. Aaron is brilliant; this much is clear. I too, have been somewhat disappointed by the plotlines in Nodwick, and the fall-back to City of Heroes gags. I should have read the writing on the wall, spammed my friends to buy more Nodwick swag, to try and bolster one of the only online comics that I feel (in my virtually worthless opinion) is worth reading. I've tried FFN and 238; just not my genre. Tried City of Heroes too, so I get the gags in the strip; but the same - not my genre. Superheroes = bleh. I'm really disappointed that Nodwick is slipping away; but in spite of Aaron's protestations, he's been growing away from it for the past two years, easy. I will continue to support Nodwick, and hope for a renaissance.
