Old-fashioned hand-tooled comics

If you ever want to challenge yourself as a comic book artist, draw a comic book that takes place around 1919. I've never drawn so many men with hats. Ps238 #7 is on track for August 1st, along with Nodwick #25! You get a double-shot from Henchman Publishing in the same week! Ps238 concerns itself with a history report about the first superhero, "Mister Extraordinary." It's the comic adventure that's been over eighty years in the making, so don't miss it!

LiveJournal is turning into a more useful tool than I'd imagined, and I'd like to thank everyone who's welcomed me into the community. I'm hoping to do an RSS feed of my comics soon (just as soon as I figure out the nuances of how its done), and since I've got a lot of new readers on board, I thought I'd restate how I update this here site: New Nodwick and FFN strips go up every Thursday. As for the journal, it's definitely updated on Thursday, as well as whenever the mood strikes. :)

And in closing, here's some fun stuff:

- If you want to see that "new" King Arthur movie, it looks like we missed its release date by about 30 years.
- This short film looks pretty interesting, but I think I'm looking ahead more to Serenity, myself. By the way, via Ain't it Cool News, here's the teaser poster.
- Got some time to kill? Want to wear a delta-shield on your chest? Check out this Star Trek game in flash. Remember: You aren't wasting your life, you're saving the federation!
- Lastly, Vin Diesel may someday guest-star as Nelson in FFN. He appears to have the chops for it (second paragraph).

Hey aaron, just wanted to say that PS238 is the best comic out there, even better than KoDT, nodwick, dork tower, and PVP (the only other books i buy ^_^).

I just wanted to let you know that you're appreciated =)
BTW, please feel free to draw more dragonlance related comics. i adore your version of raistlin (so much that i asked you to draw it for me at a gencon a while back...) Can you do lord soth?

I could always draw an all-black piece with two glowing eyes captioned, "Lord Soth feeling VERY glum, indeed." :)

Welcome aboard

Aaron,

Welcome to LiveJournal. Been a huge fan of yours for quite some time now, and I thank you for the free comics.

But, don't worry. I actually purchase your comics too. Anything to keep Nodwick and PS238 around.

S'all from this side of the screen.

Welcome Aaron.. it is about time you and your lovely wife got into this LiveJournal thing. :)

Now, all we need to do is get the Kurtz on board and our plan to take over the world will be one step closer to being complete... Mua ha ha... *ahem*

Anyways.. just wanted to say hi, and that I won't be seeing you at Origins or GenCon.. and hoping that you are coming out to Comic Con... *hope*

Let me know...

Hee-hee. I doubt we'll get Scott on board, as he's got the PvP forums and his "rants" section. :)

Sadly, I won't be at Origins either, but the wife and I will be lurking about San Diego! We could go play "Spot the Wheaton" or something.

Ah hah!

Now that I know you will be there, (and you hopefully like sushi) I will have to invite you two to the dinner party.. all you can eat sushi... :)

I am really looking forward to San Diego... (and I need to make dinner reservations soon!) I want to invite that elusive Wheaton, but he doesn't know me, and I don't know him... and well, I'm just a fangirl to him.. *sigh*

If you're referring to "Octopus' Garden," we're probably going to be there, with the Kurtz's, on any given night.

It's almost funny; out of all the actors, artists, and media people we could meet, Cristi and I start jumping up and down with delight at the thought of a San Diego sushi restaurant. Where are my geek priorities? Where-- is that unagi? Mmmmmm...

Is that the name of the one with the all you can eat sushi?? Cause I forgot to write down the name... and I need to put in a reservation for Friday night for around 50.

Oh, yes, the Kurtz's are invited too... I had great success the last few years, and so I am not going to miss doing this year!! Yay!

I don't recall if they had an all-you-can-eat. It was the one with the big aquarium right in front of the entrance. It was also near the "Artesia" health spa.

Vin Diesel

I love the fact that Vin is into D&D, and that I found out about it through your site Aaron. I only discovered you and your comics last year, and I am waiting for the PS238 compilation to come out so I can snatch it up. I cannot *wait* for the FFN comic/book, I laugh my butt off, half the things you write & draw have happened to me in the various groups I've been in!

Keep up the great work, I love it and am always showing folks your site, and telling people to go to it and read your comics. More PS238 updates though!

Love,
RPG-MAN (sorry, no perky goth cutie here) :)

Re: Vin Diesel

Thanks! I'm going to embed this LiveJournal at ps238.com, too. As for the updates there, they're going to be a bit more sporradic as I don't have the time to devote to it weekly like I do here (it's more of a straight-to-print comic). I will, however, be putting up some more of the 3 to 5 page stories in the near future. I'll note any updates here!

Men in Hats

I will have to pick up this issue.

I almost wish that men wearing hat would come back into fashon as everyday headware again. (baseball caps don't count) I think that they would bring a little bit formality back into socity as we have gotten a little to lax in my humble opinion.

Ah well. I'm not going to die if it doesn't happen.

(rantings of a tired brain)

Re: Men in Hats

I always wondered something about "the age of hats" for men. It looks like (from photos of the era) that men used a LOT of greasy stuff to keep their hair in place. Then, they put hats on top of that. Did they have to replace the liners a lot, or did they just live with the... squishy moistness?

Re: Men in Hats

Regarding the frequency with which men in hats changed the inside bands or liners, I was just re-reading the Sherlock Holmes mystery "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle." In it, Holmes deduces that the subject of his investigation was once a rich and fastidious man who has fallen on hard times by admiring his hat.

The expensive hat is three years old, containing a discolored silk lining and band. He notices that hat has fallen into disrepair, not by looking at the liner, but by looking at the un-repaired hat securer, some kind of elastic loop which has worn out. He also notes that the hat had not been brushed clean in weeks (presumeably by his wife), and that it is apparent from the way that some recently cut hair sticks to the inside of the hat that the man uses lime cream. Holmes seems to think that if the man had money, he'd replace the whole hat, and if he had foresight, he'd replace the securer. But Holmes does not remark that the liner and band should be replaced.

From this, I'd guess that people wore slightly oversized hats that they secured with replaceable parts, that the hats were commonly cleaned with a brush and that they were replaced as often as possible. I suspect that a hat did more to keep dust and gunk off of a pommaded head than it did to hold it in. I mean, if folks always wore their hat while outside and always took it off while inside, that would make some sense. Before paved roads and during the pommade times, dust would have stuck to an uncovered head pretty badly.

Cheerio,

Aaron, as a gamer and avid reader of your comics, there's one thing I have to say to you: Thank you! Nodwick and the gang have saved me from the depths of boredom many times during our gaming sessions when the action has been stalled for a long time due to a rules dispute or the like. I am not worthy!

Oh, and don't tell my DM I said that...

I just wanted to join the endless line of greeters to LJ. I've been a Nodwick fan for a long while now, ever since I saw your LOTR parody being presented at a forum concerning that trilogy. I've been reading Nodwick since then (and attracted a few odd stares in class when I laughed out loud during some rather boring grammar lessons because I was reading Nodwick meanwhile), and since you have now joined LJ, I figured I should at least say how much fun I think it is, well drawn and an excellent sense of humour. :)

Re: woa...Semi-Long Time reader, First time Blogger..

Dang! I was in a hurry and forgot! I'll have 'em in by next week. :)

As for my e-mail, I humbly apologize to those I appear to "snub." I get so much e-mail (well, spam, anyhow) that my filters sometimes get out of hand (I use "saproxy" and a few other tricks). I do try to comb through my "deleted items" folder every so often to find mistakenly zapped correspondance, but things often slip through the cracks.

It's for that reason that I keep my LJ open to anonymous postings, so everyone can yell at me. :)

Will PS238 and Nodwick still be going out to comic book stores through Diamond? Was there a mistake or something? I was told PS238 and Nodwich were canceled by my shop.

[info]ps238principal

June 14 2004, 22:41:34 UTC 7 years ago

Yes, indeed! When a comic is "cancelled" by Diamond, it just means that particular issues were late and must be re-solicited. Sadly, Dork Storm Press had apparently used up it's "final chances" on books due to previous cancellations of other titles. So, wheras the comics would have been listed as returnable items, we now have to wait until August 1st. On the up side, both Nodwick and ps238 will come out on the same day at the beginning of August, and ps238 #8 will come out at the end of August!

So all is well, just a little delayed. On another up note, the trades for both Nodwick and ps238 will be out at Origins and in stores soon after! :)

Thank you. I'll let me store know so they won't cancel everybody's pull for the books.
